With the arrival of the holiday season, Food Tank is spotlighting children’s books that tell the stories behind the food we eat. For children, learning about the food system through reading can help them begin to think about their role in a healthy food system—as community gardeners, chefs, or even environmental activists. And, with stories shedding light on the experiences of food workers, migrant farmers, and communities fighting for justice, these books will offer schools and families a starting point to
start deep discussions and reflections about the future of the food system.
Food Tank has compiled a list of 12 children’s books covering topics such as climate change, community activism, agriculture, nutrition, sustainability, and more: Amelia’s Road by Linda Jacobs Altman; Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington; Community Soup by Alma Fullerton; Green Green: A Community Gardening Story by Marie Lamba and Baldev Lamba; Little Seeds by Charles Ghigna; Our Community Garden by Barbara Pollack; Plants Feed Me by Lizzy Rockwell; Slaying the Climate Dragon by Kate Marvel; Stone Soup; That’s Not Fair!/¡No Es Justo! By Carmen Tafolla and Sharyll Teneyuca; The Curious Garden by Peter Brown, The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin; and What’s On Your Plate: Exploring the World of Food by Whitney Stewart.
