The James Beard Foundation (JBF) will host its eighth annual food summit, “Consuming Power,” on October 23 and 24 at the Convene Conference Center in New York City. Topics of conversation will explore what Americans want from their food, what the challenges and opportunities for a sustainable food system look like in the new political landscape, and where the new levers of change are for policy and business. The 2017 JBF Food Summit will bring together experts from a range of disciplines to discuss the future of food and how consumers can affect change in the food system. Speakers include chef and author Dan Barber, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, and Blue Apron Founder and CEO Matt Salzberg. The two-day event aims to help participants find their own place in the food movement and identify strategies for increasing impact.
Founded in 1986, JBF celebrates and nurtures leaders in the food movement who are “making America’s food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone.” The Foundation supports a host of programs that range from educational initiatives to research findings. JBF and Food Tank collaborate to produce the Good Food Org Guide, an annual publication that highlights the “dozens of nonprofit organizations who are working in fields, kitchens, classrooms, laboratories, businesses, town halls, and Congress to create a better food system.”
The Foundation also plans to reveal findings from a national survey about food shopping behaviors, the result of a collaboration with Radius Global Market Research, a New York-based market research company. This will be the first time JBF releases its own research at a food summit.
